Do You Struggle with Weight Loss?

Are you struggling to lose weight?
People overeat for a variety of reasons:
  • Our poor food choices
  • Emotional hunger
  • Unmet needs
  • Repressed feelings
  • Confusion around self identity
  • A call for love and help
  • Self hatred
  • Our disconnection from the body
  • Past history of sexual abuse
  • Being wounded by love
  • Financial worries
  • Repressed creativity
  • Being someone we are not
  • The need to forgive and move on
  • The need to earn how to truly nourish and care for oneself
  • Loneliness
In an article in The Institute for the Psychology of Eating, they say to "listen to your weight".  I have not researched this group, so I don't know how science based their research is, but I believe that it is important to look at the reason an overweight person thinks they struggle with weight.  Going on a "diet" is never the long term answer to the problem.  A 30 day "cleanse fast", or short term low carb diet is not the answer to life long weight management and health.

Favorite Saturday Morning Breakfast

Just got back from an hour and a half walk in the woods with my girlfriend and Sophie.  Not just wonderful exercise but talking with a friend, having my four footed friend with me and enjoying nature contributes to a healthy life......followed by my favorite Saturday breakfast..
An apple (full of vitamin C and fiber) with crunchie peanut butter (protein & mono-saturated fats), raisins (iron & potassium), and cinnamon (anti oxidants).  There are so many fun flavors and textures going on!

How Do You Prefer YOUR Oreo Cookies?

Food can be FUN, and it is so comforting the great scientific minds are helping us in that endeavor.
Check out what machines can do for us now----separate the cookie part of the Oreo from the creamy center.  That's right----I know we'll all sleep better tonight knowing that.  In the mean time, you should check out the video, it is FUN!

Portion Control is KEY

Food has gone through a technological revolution in the US in the last 50 years. Food is available in more variety, in more forms and in more combinations than ever before. The key word in that previous sentence,(click on link for details)

Science has known that for years (which is why I have an entire section labeled "easy portion tips").  But science based knowledge bears repeating!

Is Gluten Free Right for Everyone?????

Everyone is talking about GLUTEN FREE diets.
So many are eating Gluten Free---but do so many need them.
Doubtful.
There was an interesting article in the New York Times
I'm writing an article for "The Nutritionist" but can't post it on my blog till it publishes
in May (Celiac Disease Month)

It is true that even if you do not have Celiac Disease---you can have a true sensitivity to Gluten.  (I was diagnosed recently.)  Go to your physician and be tested BEFORE you go on a Gluten Free diet, because the blood test for antibodies can be negative if done after being on a gluten free diet.

Here are a number of helpful websites if you need more support or details.

An Apple A Day.........

According to Constance Brown-Riggs, MSEd, RD, CDE, CDN, “Research findings are in agreement with the adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Apples are full of antioxidants, including polyphenols, flavonoids, and vitamin C, and are a good source of fiber and potassium. Numerous studies show an association between apples’ high antioxidant activity and a decreased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and asthma.2
It’s best to eat apples rather than drink apple juice. Whole apples are richer in dietary fiber than juice, and the juicing process drastically reduces the amount of polyphenols found in the whole fruit.”  To read more---go to Today’s Dietitian http://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/121112p20.shtml

Two People & a Turkey Breast

If you are only cooking for one or two---consuming an entire turkey breast does not have to be boring!  We just cut into the breast the other day and used in as the main meat in a deli sandwich.

The next day I made up a walnut pesto (the basil in the kitchen window was growing out of control)--using walnuts instead of pine nuts really boosts the healthy Omega-3 & Omega-6 essential fatty acids.  I spread the pesto on whole wheat wraps and topped with turkey, fresh tomato, & sprouts---yum!

Today I'm making Turkey Reuben Sandwiches---so we have completely new flavor sensation.
Tomorrow is turkey salad with grapes and walnuts---toast the walnuts and let them cool before putting into the salad---it really brings out a wonderful flavor---and again---more of those healthy Omega essential fatty acids.

Do you have any favorite ways to utilize turkey???

Reduce WRINKLES!!!!!

The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables fight inflammation and its aging effects. Having all of those antioxidants on zooming around inside is like an internal sunscreen. It basically decreases inflammation and can help fight the inflammation caused by eating the wrong things. I eat LOTS of fruits and vegetables.

Feed My Starving Children is Sending Food to Japan

Details from their website say:
$0.24 provides One Meal!!!!
They have provided Millions of Meals around the world to needy children.
From its beginnings, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) has worked to develop a food mixture that would be easy and safe to transport, simple to make with only boiling water, and culturally acceptable worldwide.
With the input of scientists from major food companies in the Twin Cities area—including Cargill and General Mills—FMSC developed MannaPack Rice, a formula consisting of:
   1.   Rice, the most widely accepted grain around the world.
   2.   Extruded soy nuggets, providing maximum protein at lowest cost.
   3.   Vitamins, minerals and a vegetarian flavoring to give growing children the critical nutritional elements they need.
   4.   Dehydrated vegetables for flavor and nutrition.
Packaged in small pouches, this easy-to-prepare food blend has won rave reviews all over the world. While the formula was designed to save the lives of severely malnourished and starving children, the ingredients also improve the health, growth and physical well-being of children who are no longer in immediate danger of starvation. A team of food scientists continues to monitor the FMSC formula to ensure that it meets nutritional needs of the world’s hungry children.
Their website is fmsc.org

Think Healthy

One would think that a person would make the immediate connection between a foul mood and the waning of "taking good care of themselves", but many still habitually act out of negativity with little or no attempt to shift their attitudes or their moods.

Old, stubborn thought patterns and belief systems must be let go of and left behind.  Behaviors with a high level of negative emotional energy cannot lead to long-term wellness, nor can wellness arrive with behaviors that mirror internal states of volatility, doubt and disbelief.

Just like We Did Before

DID YOU KNOW?: During World War II, as an alternative to rationing, Americans planted “victory gardens,” in which they grew their own food. By 1945, some 20 million such gardens were in use and accounted for about 40 percent of all vegetables consumed in the U.S. Read more about the U.S. home front during World War II at http://bit.ly...

This is from a History Channel post----A victory garden would be a great step to fresh healthy eating!
